Alcohol Abuse Wales And Greece - 2912 Words

Introduction: I have chosen the topic of Alcohol abuse in Wales and Greece. The reason I have chosen these two countries is because they are very similar in size and they have both had numerous reports of alcohol abuse. I believe that I have the relevant information on both countries to be able to put together an investigation on which one is worse off. There is many different types of drinking that effects both countries the same, for example, there is different statistics for binge drinking and different statistics for under age alcohol abuse. The reason that I am looking into this issue in depth is because of the fact that I believe it is an issue that affects various different countries around the globe but I wasn’t able to compare many countries with Wales because they are a lot bigger and due to that fact it would not be a fair investigation. Another reason that I have chosen both of these countries to look into Alcohol abuse about is because they are both notorious for many youth’s drinking alcohol at least once every week which will obviously increase the overall statistics for both of the countries that I am studying. I will look for some more information on alcohol abuse in these two countries just to make sure that the amount I have is suitable for this particular investigation and to make sure that I am able to give the correct statistics. Plato’s Utopia Free Essays

PLATO’s UTOPIA I. What is the main argument of Plato about society, social relationships, and the individuals relationship with his society? Plato, the Father of Philosophy, was known as a Classical Greek philosopher, mathematician, founder of the Academy in Athens, and lastly, as a writer. In fact, one of his books, The Republic, was one of the best-known work and has proven to be one of the most intellectually and historically influential works of philosophy and political theory. We will write a custom essay sample on Plato’s Utopia or any similar topic only for you Order Now The central principle of this book is Plato’s argument about the ideal society. Likewise, it was said that the main argument of The Republic is about being a good person, the struggle for justice. Plato ideally dreamt of a world grounded by genuine goodness. Moreover, Plato’s account doesn’t only talks about the ideal society and justice, he also focuses on the issues about goodness, censorship, education, etc. With concerns to censorship, in this book, he mentioned that â€Å"censorshipâ€Å" (basically referring to videos and music), plays an important role in one society because basically, it could give license to everyone in a republic, and thus can lead people to of course, do whatever they want. Another concept or argument in Plato’s account is his belief of goodness. He emphasizes that being good is actually good, and to add on to that, he also stated that virtue is what makes a person internal and thus gives harmony to one’s soul. Education was also one of the theme of the text. In his writing, this great philosopher pointed out that education was the whole course of the state, of our lives. It is all about our ethics, jobs, life, career, destiny and faith. In relation to this, he mentioned about the concept of â€Å"pragmatism† which talks about how a person deals with the world and not transcend on judging culture. Likewise, Plato’s republic also deal with the solutions to overcome sexual discrimination. According to him, men and women can be completely â€Å"equalized† on the premise that women must never be again mothers. Plato believed that this is what it would take to overcome sexual differentiation in hierarchy. Lastly, he made the â€Å"Theory of Forms† –what is rue in an absolute sense, what is possible to know. To sum it up, basically, Plato’s republic is about life, how you live and leave it. It’s not just about his wishes on having an â€Å"ideal society†, but also, is about REALITY. II. Regardless of your position with regard to Plato’s views about society and the citizen, what are the three most important lessons about citizenship and life within a political c ommunity or society that you can derive from the discussions in the documentary film? Justice, Education and Equality. These three were the most important and valuable lessons which Plato’s Republic emphasized. First is Justice. In the first part of the documentary film, the scene was already depicting the struggle of the republic for justice. Plato ‘s vision of an ideal society is linked to the idea of justice, the prevalence of truth, for it is a contributing factor on how to obtain a peaceful and orderly kind of community. Second is the importance of education. Plato believed that a well-education person has all the skills needed in order to come up with wise decision especially in the political realm. Thus, can incorporate justice in the society, in the government which also can resist vices like corruption. And third, is the vital sense of equality, especially between the rights of men and women. As we all know, women were treated differently as to men, they were deprived of having the rights which men have like having the right to education. So, sexual discrimination, as we call it, was one of the issues which Plato wishes to resolve. He maintained that prospective male and female, should receive the same education and be assigned to the same vital functions within the society. III. How does social capital fit into the underlying view of citizenship? Social capital refers to connections among individuals –social networks and the norms of reciprocity and trustworthiness. It is a resource should be used for public good or for the benefit of individuals; thus facilitate co-operation and mutually supportive relations in communities and therefore solve modern issues. With those definitions, it can be seen that social capital fit into the underlying view of citizenship for it entails the duties and responsibilities that a citizen must have. What I mean is that, as a citizen, the idea of social capital can be of big help for it lets the people to be aware of certain issue which actually leads them to be active enough to collaborate in order to find innovative solutions and remedies. The idea of social capital also helps the citizens to utilize and maximize their resources for the betterment of their society. . How to cite Plato’s Utopia, Essay examples

The batteries of these ebikes can be recharged as needed. The companies which produce these ebikes must go through a proper marketing strategy so they can attract the customers towards them. Overview of the organizations The journey of this organization began in the year 2007. The beginning of the organization started in a way when an engineering firm that was based in Australia began their dream of building a custom bike frame (Dillengerelectricbikes.com.au, 2018). They wanted to build it from the rods made by stainless steel. The complex arrangements took a long time to make it. Suddenly, an idea of motorizing this bike came to their minds. The firm was an engineering one and this idea did not seem to be an impossible one for them. They had been successful in framing a proper bike that looked like to be a vintage model indeed. They had a proper client base in the region. They decided to show these models to them. A time had come when the company had been completely engaged in producing the ebikes completely. The location of the company is at Queensland in Australia (Dillengerelectricbikes.com.au, 2018). The company had seen its growth by the sale of their innovative products like the electric bikes . They have always thrived for the innovation of the new and better maintained bike models (Rose, 2012). It has been observed that the sale of Dilenger had not been up to the proper mark as expected. This strategy of the company had stunted their growth rates. This is why they had to focus on the more production of their goods (Dillengerelectricbikes.com.au, 2018). These products at first did not seem to be proper and reliable for the products Bulls ebikes Bulls ebikes has been one of the most successful electric bike companies in the United States (www.bullsebikes.com, 2018). They are of the opinion that the relative factors in the daily lives like the parking for the hunting and daily traffic jams in the roads. Marketing strategies The companies have adopted some important strategies to cater to the increasing demands of the customers (Sundar Balaji Kumar, 2014). The companies have thought of introducing the free electric bikes that will be helpful in many cases for many people indeed. This can be put in as a non-durable product. They must adopt some product strategies like:- This is completely a shopping product (Jobber Ellis-Chadwick, 2012). The product can be run by free electricity. It will be easier for the rural people to purchase and use it. This can be used for exercise and as a generator of electricity. The battery should be maintenance free (Jobber Ellis-Chadwick, 2012). The batteries could be charged with the USB ports on plug points. Customer value The customer value proposition has been a very important thing in the business operations for both the companies (Wilson et al., 2016). While the aim of the Bulls ebikes has set their aim to provide the adventure seekers through their bikes, it has to be kept in mind that they should help the poor people as well as a part of their corporate social responsibility (Carroll, 2015). They can help the poor people and give the same amount of value to their poor customers as much as the rich ones. Target market segmentation The segmentation market can be based on the four sections and they are geographic, demographic, psychographic and socio-economic. The geographic focus should be put on the areas where the electricity prices are too high indeed (Weinstein Cahill, 2014). The people who are mainly youngsters should be the main target market for the companies. They should aim to pull the young boys towards them. The income levels should be the lower and middle income levels. They should be able to afford those products (Weinstein Cahill, 2014). The free electric bikes should be given to the people in these areas because they want it to provide the people the best opportunities to thrive themselves and use the best technological facilities within the country (Weinstein Cahill, 2014). Four Ps or Marketing mix The promotion of the products should be done properly. They should promote the products all over the country by showing their benefits (Khan, 2014). The companies will probably like to put its focus on the eco-friendly energy indeed. This would be helpful for the customers indeed. Both the companies should try to use the social media for the better spreading of the messages indeed (Khan, 2014). The universal energy can be accessed through using the electric bikes. Price The price of the products should be kept at a level that all the people from different economic backgrounds can be able to afford that (Khan, 2014). The EMI rates should be slashed down for the benefit from the customers end. The companies can provide good financial schemes for the advantage of the customers. As the economy of Australia and USA is different, both the companies should try to keep the prices according to the per capita income and GDP of the countries (Kubiszewski et al., 2013). Place The products should be sold at different areas in the country. Both the companies should set up some regional outlets from where the customers will be able to buy their favorite products (Khan, 2014). They should be actively present in the online shopping (Luo, Ba Zhang, 2012). Customers should be able to buy, share their feedback and report their problems through internet. Product The product i.e. the free electric bikes would be very much customer friendly and environment friendly. The products should be cost effective and be able to increase the market share indeed Market entry Both the companies like the Bulls ebikes and Dilenger Electric Bikes- Gold Cast have adopted for the market entry in the new market zones. It is a very common notion that Europe has a great demand for the technologically sound things. The retailers should be able to provide the best electric bikes to their target customers that would meet their requirements (Laufs Schwens, 2014). The companies will try to capture the European market because it would enhance their organizational productivity. The Dilenger Electric Bikes should introduce new programs in which they would focus on their products of electric bikes. They should be very much active in the social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others (Saravanakumar SuganthaLakshmi, 2012). If the number of followers increase, this will be very much beneficial for them. They should take up the foreign direct investment (FDI) policies to expand their markets in Europe and Asia (Laufs Schwens, 2014).. The demands of their target market segments should be met by both Delinger Electric Bikes and Bulls ebikes. These things would be very much beneficial for them to gain the customer loyalty. The use of technology is a very important thing as Delinger Electric Bikes is an engineering firm. They should utilize all the relevant technological tools into the production of their ebikes (Best, 2012). Conclusion This paper can be concluded by saying that ebikes have become a modern sensation. The manufacturers of ebikes have to keep in mind that the the young generation is the main target market of these vehicles. This is why they have to fulfill the requirements of them. In this scenario, they will need to adopt a strong marketing strategy that will cater to the cost-effectiveness of the companies. The issues in foreign market expansion will have to be mitigated properly. This is how they would get success by following a proper marketing strategy. References Best, R. Opposing Views on Renewable Energy free essay sample

Over the years, there has been a huge debate whether using renewable energy is beneficial to our environment or not. The biggest source of our energy has been sourced by coal, oil and natural gasses. Some researchers believe that there are many benefits of using renewable energy and that we should be concerned with seeking environmentally friendly alternatives instead. Not only are these sources harmful, they will eventually deplete our natural resources. The goal is to find pollution-free renewable energy that can offer a better future. Although using renewable energy sounds like a great idea, several people argue that renewables are not green, nor are they sustainable. The only way it’s even possible for renewable energy to contribute to production is by taking up vast amounts of land which in return will cause more damage. In order to truly go green, the best solution would be to use nuclear power instead. We will write a custom essay sample on Opposing Views on Renewable Energy or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Not only does it generate large amounts of powers, it takes up a much smaller amount of land. Personally, I agree. This will help shrink our society’s energy system and reduce costs for everyone. My perception of â€Å"going green† and using renewable energy is that it would prevent growth from happening. From the lights we use in our house, to the fuel we put in our vehicles, everything we do and enjoy these days requires some a source of energy and power. I do think it’s important to create a better future, however, if going green means taking up a ton of land to create new sources, I’m against it. In the past eight years of living in my city, it’s gone from cow pastures and empty fields, to shopping centers and houses. Everything I do is within a few miles from my home now and I love it. It’s hard to support a cause for change, when you’ve grown up seeing the opposite. My lifestyle and past has really shaped me into who I am now and what I’m accustomed to. My perception now is that I can’t live without the things I have because I’ve grown to like them. My daily life and habits make me hesitant to change. Looking back at my city before the new growth began, if those fields ended up becoming energy sources, would I know any different? Would I care? Going forward, I need to question whether I have accurate information or have made assumptions about what is and what isn’t relevant. It’s also smart to get someone else’s point of view. A crucial part of life is rolling with the punches. Not every change is going to be bad, and I have learned that you have to look at both sides of things in order to make a fair decision. If I have a habit of always thinking negatively, there’s a good chance my perception will be altered too. I’m confident in myself and know that I’m capable of growing and changing with the situation arises.

Selected Tips On Writing a Competent Sports Essay

Selected Tips On Writing a Competent Sports Essay What Is a Sports Essay? Sports essay is a piece of writing which contemplates expressing an opinion about an issue related to sports. There is a wide range of topics which a writer can address. Sport is usually concerned with physical effort and specific skills which form the basis for the competency among different actors longing for entertainment. It contemplates engagement between the people, setting the rules of a game, provision of equipment, promotion, and operations with media. Consequently, it refers to different spheres of social life. In its turn, it creates the space for sharing integral ideas and starting a discussion. From Where to Start? Before writing an essay on sports, the author should identify the purpose of writing. The object defines the style and the writing details of the article. Firstly, there are informative essays, which describe the particular event or its significance for the life of people. For example, one can write a piece on the history of the NBA and the effect of it on the modern culture. Secondly, there are persuasive essays which aim to convince the reader of something related to sports. The example can be the work arguing that athletes should not be suspended from competitions for the whole life because of drugs or doping. Another type is an opinion essay. The purpose of such a composition is to convey the notion about sports events. For instance, one may argue for his or her favorite kind of sport or declare the unnecessity of video assistance for referees as it may harm the spectacularity of the matches. The last kind is about comparing sports or the significant figures in different games. As the sports contemplate rivalry and competence, there are always debates on who is better. For example, a person can contrast the performances of different stars, in particular, a comparison between Kevin Durant and Lebron James in the NBA, or Messi and Ronaldo in soccer. These are central kinds of essays that may help learners choose the theme and direction of writing. What Topic to Choose? The choice of topic is not limited to the purpose. The writer can think over the sphere of connection of sport to the human life. Moreover, competition is an excellent source for studying leadership or management. There are a lot of sports teams, and behind every united group, there is a manager. His or her skills can be observed to outline leadership. However, the most often used topics relate to worldwide events, most popular sports, problems referring to game rules, the significance of teams, players or managers, and comparison of different sports: FIFA World Cup and Its Meaning for the Modern Society; Who Did More Contribution to Basketball Lebron James or Michael Jordan? Some Sports Are Dangerous and Should Be Restricted; Drugs and Doping in Sports; Should Violent Kinds of Sports Be Broadcasted on TV? Why Should the Government Support National Sport and Its Proliferation? Should Games Be Used for Commercial Purposes? How Sports Affect Children and Their Development? Before writing, a person should know that the topic would be interesting for him or her and the audience. Following, the writer should try to avoid the trivia issues as they may not be suitable for the audience. These are examples of undeveloped topics: Sport Is Good for Everybody; Michael Jordan Is the Best Athlete in the World; The Impact of Squatting. With the definition of the topic of an essay, the next stage comes. It refers to the pre-writing tips. They are the guarantees that the article would have suitable content, firm evidence, and precise structure. Where to Start a Research? As soon as the topic was chosen, the next step is to evaluate the subject and the latest events concerning the subject. For example, if the essay is about soccer, the writer may apply to the most recent developments relating to the World Cup. Reference to the latest events can be a sign of awareness of the issues and in-depth knowledge about the subject. However, prior to any writing, severe research is needed. The research part would ensure that the paper would have strong arguments backed by the statistics or facts. By that, the writer should think over adequate sources which would be credible and have the necessary information. Writing depends not only on the topic but the sources. If a writer prepares the materials on the significance of the teams or players, the best sources of the information would be informational agencies, documentaries or biographies. They provide primary facts and analytical materials for those who lack knowledge on a subject. For example, if writing about golfer Tiger Woods and his significance, the ESPN.com can be a useful place to search for information. However, considering his statistics, there is no better place than the official website of the golf tournaments. Following, the best sources when seeking the information for statistics refer to the sports news or the official data of an organization providing the sports tournaments. Moreover, the documentaries are an excellent way to find the vision over a specific issue. The biographies give the summary of life and records of the famous sportsmen and women carrying the understanding of their success. Among other websites which may be helpful, there are such news agencies as SkySports.com, BBC.com, euronews.com. They usually cover all international events and may provide the chronology or analytical opinion. At the same, time if there is an ethical or social issue to be evaluated, there are reports of independent organizations, sports institutions, and documents of the scientific or sports groups. If the writer decides to write about the effect of the sports industry on other spheres, including business, health or politics, there are some articles to be found. At Thesportjournal.org you can find such information as there is a pool of the academic articles. Besides, if the author wants to pay attention to the effects on health, there is Sportsmedicine-open.springeropen.com, where the items on sports medicine are placed. Another source of information on the recent events refers to the sports magazines. It is better to address specialized sports articles and choose an appropriate due to the kind of sports the writer is searching for. The best source for information on soccer is FourFourTwo. Besides, there are other websites such as ESPN The Magazine, Sporting News, Athletics Weekly, The Hockey News, Boxing News, Basketball Times, Baseball America. They provide news and statistics on the particular kind of sport. Writing Process Begins: It’ll Be Easier with Our Writers’ Help Another part of the pre-writing process is composing an outline. The significance of the plan is about giving logic, structure, and sequence to any opinion. The outline is to provide the structure and vision to the whole paper. It consists of three parts which are equally important for the spread of ideas: Intro The first part of the outline is an introduction. It consists of the sentences which grab the attention of the audience, tell about the main points of the future work, and give a general picture. It provides the gradual vision to the rest of the paper as giving starting and finishing lines. Here, the writer shows the thesis. It is the critical solution, idea, or claim of the essay expressed in one or two questions. It is comprised of arguments the writer would develop in the next parts, in particular, the main body. Example: For instance, the main topic â€Å"The necessity to regulate martial arts† contemplates explaining why the martial arts as sports should have governmental control. By that, the thesis requires showing why the writer thinks so and producing critical arguments. In the particular case, it could relate to the violence and injury rate of the sports. The more specific the thesis is, the better, as it would allow the writer to maintain logic and produce fundamental ideas. Body Paragraphs The next part of the outline refers to the body paragraphs. They constitute the sections in which the writer proves a particular point of view. The principal purpose of this section is to contribute to the arguments of the thesis. Each body paragraph begins with the transition sentence which directs to the following discussion. Further, the fundamental idea of the debate is provided in one sentence. It shall refer to the thesis. Besides, the subsequent information aims to support the idea with evidence or facts. It is necessary to rest on personal experience of the writer or credible sources depending on the ultimate goal of the text. Example: If the writer is sharing an opinion about the skills of Lebron James, the evidence can be his vision of the mastered skills or the way the player leads his team. Besides, the facts or statistics, records or achievements can supplement it and support the idea. The details matter, so for the writer it is necessary to look for the proper sources. In the ending part of the body paragraph, the author connects the evidence and the idea, so that the argument was solid and contributing to the thesis. However, every part must be completed. The writer should conclude every paragraph with the concluding statement proving the argument. Example: For instance, the argument may state: ‘there is a high injury rate in martial arts, and the most devastating kicks shall be forbidden’. The support may be the provision of the statistics from the media. Other than that, it may be backed by the explanation of kicks to a grounded opponent. In the end, the writer should refer to the main idea of the argument and show how it contributes to the thesis. Saying that there are injuries and underlining their dangerous nature would support the idea of restriction. On the contrary, the negative example of the same idea may sound like â€Å"the fighters kick hard and the rules should be reviewed†. In this part, there is no logical connection to the thesis. Besides, it is the vague statement as the fighters hit hard to win, it is the essence of the martial art. The ultimate part of any essay refers to the conclusion. It is the essential part of the article as it shows the results of the work. In the first sentences of the judgment, the author restates the beginning statement. For the sports essays, it is what the writer wrote in the introduction. Example: The writer should again underline that the martial arts are dangerous and need control. The subsequent information would depict the findings of the writer. Concerning the examples provided above, they may be the record of injuries or description of violent actions. Besides, the writer can add his or her general comments deriving from the findings. Post-Writing Is a Final Straight Other than the main scope of work, a number of steps shall be made after the writing itself. When the author has an outline, the paper begins. However, as in any great sport, serious activities occur on the finish line. For the writer, it is the post-writing stage, which gives the writing the quality and power. It refers to editing, proofreading, and referencing. Editing in the sports essay refers to making the piece sound good and eliminating the mistakes. There are different ways to improve the composition and check its content. Proofreading is the reading the written materials to find errors. In sports essay writing, there are usually a lot of names, if the topic refers to the teams or persons. Besides, the errors may apply to the incorporation of statistics into the text. The writer shall check whether there are the right prepositions and tenses. As far as the sport is about the records, the author should check the dates and precise events, so that the facts were correct. The misspelling of names, data, or places may harm the support of the idea. Lastly, there is a paper referencing, where the writer provides the sources backing the evidence for the arguments support. The inclusion of references is important, as it shows that the essay is credible. All the information about sources the writer adds at the end of the paper. 6 Strategies to Successfully Pass a School Bond

6 Strategies to Successfully Pass a School Bond A school bond provides a financial avenue for school districts to meet an immediate specified need. These specified needs can range from a new school, classroom building, gymnasium, or cafeteria to repairing an existing building, new buses, upgrades in classroom technology or security, etc. A school bond issue must be voted on by the members of the community in which the school is located. Most states require a three-fifths (60%) super-majority vote to pass a bond. If the school bond passes, property owners in the community will foot the bill for the bond issue through increased property taxes. This can create a dilemma for voters in the community and is why many proposed bond issues do not receive enough â€Å"yes† votes to pass. It takes a lot of dedication, time, and hard work to pass a bond issue. When it passes it was well worth it, but when it fails it can be extremely disappointing. There is no exact science for passing a bond issue. However, there are strategies that when implemented can help improve the chances that the bond issue will pass. Build a Foundation The district superintendent and the school board are often the driving forces behind a school bond issue. They are also responsible for getting out into the community, building relationships, and keeping people informed about what is happening with the district. It is vital to have good standing relationships with powerful civic groups and key business owners within a community if you want your bond to be passed. This process should be continuous and ongoing over time. It should not happen just because you’re trying to pass a bond. A strong superintendent will make their school the focal point of the community. They will work hard to forge those relationships that will pay off in times of need. They will make community involvement a priority inviting members into the school not only see what is going on but to become a part of the process themselves. Potentially passing a bond issue is just one of the many rewards that come with this holistic approach to community involvement. Organize and Plan Perhaps the most crucial aspect of passing a school bond is to be well organized and to have a solid plan in place. This begins with forming a committee that is as dedicated to seeing the bond passed as you are. It is necessary to note that most states prohibit schools from using their own resources or time to lobby on behalf of a bond issue. If teachers or administrators are to participate on the committee, it must be on their own time. A strong committee will consist of school board members, administrators, teachers, advisory councils, business leaders, parents, and students. The committee should be kept as small as possible so that a consensus can be reached easier. The committee should discuss and create a detailed plan on all aspects of the bond including timing, finances, and campaigning. A specific task should be given to each committee member to carry out according to their individual strengths. A school bond campaign should start approximately two months before the vote is scheduled to occur. Everything occurring in those two months should be well thought out and planned in advance. No two bond campaigns are the same. It is likely that parts of the plan will have to be abandoned or changed after realizing that the approach is not working. Establish a Need It is essential to establish a real need in your bond campaign. Most districts have a list of projects that they believe need to be completed. When deciding what you are going to put in the bond it is vital to look at two factors: immediate need and investment in your student body. In other words, put projects on the ballot that will resonate with voters who understand the value of education and show them there is a need. Make those connections apart of your campaign and bundle things where appropriate. If you are trying to build a new gymnasium, package it as a multipurpose facility that will not only serve as a gymnasium but as a community center and auditorium so that it can be used by all students and not just a select few. If you are trying to pass a bond for new buses, be prepared to explain how much money you are currently spending to maintain your bus fleet that is outdated and run down. You can even use a deteriorated bus in your campaign by parking it in front of the school with information about the bond. Be Honest It is essential to be honest with the constituents in your district. Property owners want to know how much their taxes are going to go up if the bond issue is passed. You should not skirt around this issue. Be direct and honest with them and always use the opportunity to explain to them what their investment will do for students in the district. If you are not honest with them, you may pass the first bond issue, but it will be more difficult when you try to pass the next one. Campaign! Campaign! Campaign! When campaigning begins it is beneficial to keep the message simple. Be specific with your message including the voting date, how much the bond is for, and some simple highlights of what it will be used for. If a voter asks for more information, then be prepared with more details. Campaigning efforts should be holistic with a goal of getting the word out to every registered voter in the district. Campaigning occurs in many different forms, and each form may reach a different subset of constituents. Some of the most popular forms of campaigning include: Build a Website – Create a website that gives voters detailed information about the bond issue.Campaign Signs/Posters – Put campaign signs in supporters’ yards and posters in high traffic locations such as the post office.Speaking Engagements – Schedule speaking engagements with civic groups in the community such as the Senior Citizen Center, Masonic Lodge, etc.Organize a Voter Registration Drive – A voter registration drive allows you to recruit newcomers and potential supporters who might not vote otherwise.Door to Door Canvassing – Simple word of mouth campaigning may make the difference especially in reminding voters to get to the polls.Telephone Committee – A simple way to poll voters in the community as well as to inform them about the bond issue and to remind them to vote.Direct Mail – Send flyers highlighting the bond issue out a few days before the vote.Media – Use the media to get the message out when possible. Focus on Uncertainty There are some constituents that have their minds made up on a bond issue before you even decide to do it. Some people always vote yes, and some people always vote no. Do not waste time on trying to convince the â€Å"no† votes that they should vote â€Å"yes†. Instead, focus on getting those â€Å"yes† votes to the polls. However, it is most valuable to invest your time and effort on those in the community that have not decided. Visit with those on the fence 3-4 times throughout the campaign to try and sway them to vote â€Å"yes†. They are the people who will ultimately decide whether the bond passes or fails.

Decision-Making Models And Leadership Theories Of Wal-Mart Research Paper

Decision-Making Models And Leadership Theories Of Wal-Mart - Research Paper Example The leadership concepts and decision-making models will be critically analyzed. Wal-Mart is among the leading American multinational retail corporation that operates warehouses and discount stores (Nandagopal & Sankar, 2009). It has created numerous employment opportunities within the United States and across the world. However, a majority of its workers live below the poverty line due to its poor pay and poor styles of leadership. The company has been criticized by a number of groups such as labor unions. There have been protests against the company’s policies as well as business practices. Racial and gender intolerance is yet another area that sees the company face a lot of criticism Poor leadership is the main organizational problem that has affected the operations of the company. The leadership at the company has been involved in various unethical practices as well as failure to address the issues facing the employees. The management staff is the key stakeholders in the problem. This problem has been going on for a long period of time until a bribery scandal at the company was revealed in 2012. This problem is attributed to poor leadership at the company and it affecting the brand image of the company. The poor leadership at the company has impacted negatively on the other internal stakeholders within the company (Albareda, et al, 2008). The employees of the company have been greatly affected as the management has been unable to address their welfare problems. The employees are being paid poorly despite being subjected to a huge workforce. The values and behaviors of the organization have also been affected by the poor leadership. The ethical values of the org anization have been compromised by the widespread corruption at the company. The public image of the company has also been affected by the corruption scandals and poor leadership.

High Speed Rail Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

High Speed Rail - Research Paper Example This type of rail system is preferable for passenger travel although it is also used for freight services in some countries. (Cox and Vranich) The purpose of this research paper is to give an overview of development of high speed rail transport, its benefits i.e. economically and environmentally, operation and maintenance and success or failure of such projects. Many policy makers in developed countries have backed the idea of a high speed rail transport. For instance, the Obama administration in the USA pledged to inject an $8 billion dollar fund to support high speed rail project as part of its economic stimulus program. This plan involved around 8500 rout-miles of high speed trains connecting about 33 states in 2009 and all the states connected by 2014. Â  (Vock, 2014) High speed rail is rapidly expanding across the world. Currently, more than 20 countries have a high speed rail transport with other 10 countries having such a system under construction. High speed rail transport has been operational in Japan for over 50 years with zero fatalities. Some policy makers argue that high speed rail train is expensive and only serve the elite in society. For instance, in the USA it is argued that the geography is unsuitable for such a system since its cities are less dense and far apart. (OToole) However, there are advantages and disadvantages associated with high speed rail transport in terms of sustainability, economically and environmentally. High speed trains can deliver passengers at a fraction of a second and costs and in all weather. It also provides convenient service to other forms of transport e.g. fast transport to airports hence allowing residents from lower societal level to benefit from a relatively cheap form of long-distance travel. Also, a single rail track and high speed train can carry many people at ago as compared to highways and this is not only convenient, but also saves time and cost. Does the Cosby Show challenge conventional stereotypes Essay Example for Free

Does the Cosby Show challenge conventional stereotypes Essay From 1984 to 1992, The Cosby Show (starring comedian/actor/author Bill Cosby) aired on NBC television network. In the storyline , a black doctor and his family (his wife and five children) lived their everyday entertaining lives. Audiences worldwide watched daily to laugh and admire the African American family ; at the same time they began to ponder about the well-off family and what this said about the conventional black family to the world. Two models are most commonly usedâ€Å"the weak family model† and the â€Å"strong family model†, says Wynona Bryant -Williams Ph. D Director â€Å"with nothing in between. † However it was the weak family model that dominated the social sciences literature until the mid 1980s. (Williams) The Cosby’s set a high standard of the stability and lifestyle of the Black American family. A bold message to send, this also challenged the realism of American culture and how it depicted African Americans and their households. Small-time author Tiffany Frizzel had this to say: â€Å"To be perfectly honest, this show does not show typical life for the vast majority of this nations population. There are not many white children in this nation that have a doctor and a lawyer as parents so that criticism lacks substance and social research. Cosby always kept the show somewhat light-hearted and sometimes shied away from some key issues of the time period, but keep in mind that his name was on the program and everything was written as if the characters were sometimes walking on eggshells. † Apparently it was hard to accept that a black family did not have to struggle or stress. Why? Even though the family still had their household disputes and their lessons to learn , the idea that this particular family of color was doing so well was hard to take and swallow. For many observers, The Cosby Show was unique in other ways as well. For example, unlike many situation comedies, the program avoided one-liners, buffoonery and other standard tactics designed to win laughs. Instead, series writers remained true to Cosbys vision of finding humor in realistic family situations, in the minutiae of human behavior. Thus episodes generally shunned typical sitcom formulas by featuring, instead, a rather loose story structure and unpredictable pacing. Moreover, the soundtrack was sweetened with jazz, and the Huxtable home prominently featured contemporary African American art. Several observers described the result as classy. This project, of course, was not without its critics. Some observers described the show as a 1980s version of Father Knows Best, the Huxtables as a white family in blackface. The Huxtables affluence, they argued, worked to obscure persistent inequalities in Americaespecially those faced by blacks and other minority groupsand validate the myth of the American Dream. One audience study suggests that the show strikes a deal with white viewers, that it absolves them of responsibility for racial inequality in the United States in exchange for inviting the Huxtables into their living room. Meanwhile, the same study found that black viewers tend to embrace the show for its positive portrayals of blackness, but express misgivings about the Huxtables failure to regularly interact with less affluent blacks. For the black family sitting at home watching the show however; it was a revelation long anticipated. This motivated and challenged families to grow closer together. Single, married, and divorced individuals all could view their expectations for their family and their futures based on the uplifting obvious message being sent. For the African American culture , this was an epidemic that needed to expand in the mindsets of everyone else in the world. As far as â€Å"Black Americaâ€Å" was concerned; this was an illustrious thing. So what exactly is the difference between â€Å"Anticipated Black America† and â€Å"Conventional Black America†? E. Franklin Frazier’s â€Å"The Negro Family in the United† States supplied a model for the study of Blacks which emphasized family disorganization and dysfunction ,2 describing the black familys present condition of matriarchy, ineffective black males being marginal to the family, casual sex relations, and general dissolution of the black family to be caused by urbanization and the heritage of slavery. Fraziers work was used for the basis of Moynihans conclusions that identified Black matriarchal mothers as responsible for the breakdown and pathology of Black families (who, he claimed, were responsible for high rates of illegitimacy, delinquency, and unemployment)3. On national renown search engine â€Å"Yahoo. com†, when the words â€Å"negro† and â€Å"black† are entered into the search bar ; words such as unemployment, equality, broken homes, proportion, and black community are given as â€Å"helpful hints† to further specify your search criteria. This is not to say that yahoo alone is portraying this image. But it does conclude a point that this issue should very well be recognized. The mental attitude of the black family’s standards in present America are poor indeed when left up to some critics. Nonetheless, Black America is continuously upgrading and rebelling in all fields of education and occupation. Our greatest and highest recognized entertainers, scholars, preachers, political figures, and moguls are filled with African American people. Many inventions are in existence today because of African Americans. A Black figure is currently running for president of the country! The Cosby Show does not challenge Black America as much as it motivates and really disciplines the mentalities and ethics behind us. The show’s head writer ,John Marcus, had this to say regarding the co-writer and star of the show Bill Cosby: I think Bill knows that he has a power, and that he thinks of it very judiciously. He is conscientious and sensitive to the minds of people who watch the show. And he is very respectful of their intelligence, said Markus. He sees that a more powerful tool in education is to entertain and engage the audience in a delicate manner rather than to hammer home a message. We want to educate black America, but we never want to Sermonize. (1990) It was never the intention of the show nor the writers behind it to preach about high time living to the black families of America. Yet, it was extremely obvious that there was luxury behind the hard work, and it’d all came from the benefit of great education. In the series, Huxtable is a doctor married to an awfully attractive, independent minded, and intelligent woman who has become quite a successful and well established lawyer. His five children all attend school and his children eventually all attend college following after their parents, but with different career motives that they each discover throughout their development from children to young adults. The Cosby Show ’s family is fiction but based on a lifestyle that is meant to be lived and enjoyed by the Black families of America. With the right motivation and the desire to become educated and to fulfill their selves , anyone of any race could very well live a full life without much struggle. The Cosbys did not live without flaws and disappointments. But they dealt with it as a strong and confident family with the continuous support and love of each and every one of their family members. This is a message that needs to be spreaded more and more everyday. The Black family can better themselves if they can get together and make a change to better their mentalities and their environment as well. Following the Cosby’s example; the Black family can succeed. â€Å"If every parent in their community taught their children how to act and teach them the life lessons that they need to succeed. Wouldnt that as a whole help the black community, one family at a time? † This was the question asked in an online discussion about upraising of children in the black community. It begins at home. If we do not or refuse to maintain order at home, there will be none outside of our households. The Cosby Show displays for us that restrictions and rules set inside the house also better govern our black children as they are outside of the household or away from home. By laying down the law in the house, the children were not as in as much trouble as friends and classmates. This distinguished them from the other children in other families on the show as well. With rules came responsibility. According to Senior Magazine Online, as humans responsibility is given to us automatically â€Å"because we are a part of society. † It is also stated that â€Å" It is in this area that we seem to be losing our children. † The main focus within the Cosby family was, without any doubt, family. The family came first. Before work, before friends, and before the personal wants of any individual; the entire family came together and worked together to make their home the joyous place it was. It was stressed as an importance that everyone was responsible in remembering birthdays, talking to their parents about their issues, and continuously seeing that a personal (perhaps assigned) chore was completed everyday. In conclusion, the Cosby Show is due many thanks and many praises. It stands, even today, as a landmark of hope and inspiration for the Black family. Although there are many public voices that are motivating us to push forward and challenge ourselves to complete education and a fulfilling life; the Cosby Show had a powerful message that is not easily forgotten and forever appreciated. The family is the most important part of our foundation. When we look back at what helped us to grow, we should find our family. A Comparitive Study Of The Work Of The Devil :: essays research papers

It is true that the study of the devil or evil in general as a part of the world has intrigued man for centuries. This is mostly because it is something people don't have concrete proof of and is also considered taboo in our society. Yet, studies and/or story telling on the devil and his evil forces seems to have been apart of all societies since the begining of time. Such as, Christpher Marlowe's play, The Tragical History of Dr. Faustas, written in the 16th century and the modern day film, The Devil's Advocate, starring Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves. The devil in Marlowe's play doesnt come to Dr. Faustas as himself , instead he sends one of his disciples named Mephistophilis. When Mephistophilis first comes to Dr. Faustas he comes as himself, a demon like creature that is not quite appealing to the eye and seems to frighten or sicken Dr.Faustas. Dr. Faustas immediatley asks Mephistophilis to come back as something more pleasant, such as a fransiscan friar. The devil immediatly does so. I assume he does this to please Dr. Faustas and to show him that with the type of power he possesses he can appear to be or even change into whom ever he wants. This being something that the doctor can also achieve by giving up his soul. He also offers Dr. Faustas many things such as, knowledge (something the Doctor can't get enough of) and tells the Doctor that he can basically have everything he desires in exchange for his soul. Something very similar to this instance also occurs in The Devils Advocate. In the beginning of the film Keanu Reeves is approached by a man( also a messenger of the devil's) in a bar offering him a job opportunity in Manhattan and to persuade him to come he offers him a very large sum of money. When Keanu arrives he is surrounded by all the materialistic things he could desire in addition to the power and acknowledgment he so strongly desires. This is all once again there to tempt him towards evil and persuade him to sell his soul. Another pertinant similarity between the 16th century play and the modern day film is the chance that both characters were given to give it all up, leave the devil and regain their souls, yet the outcome is far different. In Marlowe's play, Dr.

Intense Factory Farming

Eng 102 Ms. Williams March 1st, 2012 Essay # 2 Intense Farming In our world today we no longer are able to farm clean natural products for others to consume. A factory farm is where animals are bred and fattened using modern industrial methods. This method allows more farming jobs to stay in the US. If we had to do it the way a farm has been run in the past, farmers wouldn't be able to compete with prices of food from China because their labor costs are much lower.According to The Scientific Veterinary Committee of the European Commission has stated, â€Å"Since the extent of the inactivity and unresponsiveness indicates abnormal behavior, the sows may well be depressed in the clinical sense and poor welfare is indicated. † Although factory farming produces more of the product to be mass distributed among countries, animals are being treated as an object instead of a living creature. These methods are rather cruel and can be harmful to these animals. These living things are he re for humans to have domain over them but the nature that these factory farmers are pursuing it is unethical and wrong. There are many more facts to be explored and through these resources one can develop the opinion whether or not these actions are right or wrong. Factory farming is something that has evolved over time. Without the advancements in medicine there would be no way our livestock would end up like this. CAFO is known for specializing in the raising of domestic pigs to be slaughtered when they have reached the proper weight. This system of pig production, grower pigs are housed indoors in group-housing or sheds. Pregnant pigs are housed sow stalls or pens and give birth in these crates.A gestation crate is only 7 feet by 2 feet; it is enclosed so the pigs aren’t able to move around freely. Animal welfare supporters see the use of gestation crates as one of the most inhumane features of animal production. More than ninety percent of pigs in the U. S. today are rais ed on factory farms. These pigs spend their entire lives in cramped, filthy warehouses under the constant stress of intense confinement. Their natural ways are denied through this system that supposedly produces more in the cost of the happiness and welfare of an animal. When the time comes for slaughter, pigs are forced onto transport trucks that travel for many miles through all weather extremes. Many die of heat exhaustion in the summer or arrive frozen to the inside of the truck in the winter. According to industry reports, more than 1 million pigs die in transport each year, and an additional 420,000 are crippled by the time they arrive at the slaughterhouse. Because of improper stunning methods, many pigs are still conscious when they are dumped into scalding-hot water, which is intended to remove their hair and soften their skin. †

A New House Readiness Essay

When making a decision to purchase a new house, one of the economic principles which one must consider will be that people face tradeoffs. If one decides to purchase a new house, he or she will need to give up things such as a holiday, new truck or what they eat which the same amount of money can purchase. In this case, one will need to weigh the priorities. For example, purchasing a new house may make travelling to school and local services more convenient, however it will require one to give up the purchase of a new car which makes travelling to work more inconvenient. Depending on what the decision maker feels is more important, he or she will decide for or against the decision to purchase the house. One of the principles of economics states that trade can make everyone better off. When trade flourishes, it results in a greater purchasing power. In such a case, marginal costs appear small owing to a better purchasing power among people. In this situation, marginal benefits exceed marginal costs and it would be a good idea to purchase the new house Another economic principle which one should consider will be to think at the margin. This will involve weighing marginal benefits and costs of the decision. In this case, marginal benefits of purchasing the house will be its close proximity which will be close to schools and local services. In addition purchasing a new house will provide cleaner, larger and newer space which will improve living conditions. However, marginal costs will include that of lowering one’s disposable income which will lower their ability to purchase other goods such as baby food necessary for the growth of the child. The marginal costs and benefits of the decision to purchase a house will depend on the other factors such as income level. When income level is low, purchasing a new house will greatly affect the disposable income and purchasing power of the decision-maker, hence it is more likely that the person make the decision against purchasing a new house.

The Changing Relationship between the Generations Youth Studies Australia

The Changing Relationship between the Generations Youth Studies Australia In the contemporary world, the media advocates for the generational changes and the effect it has towards the economy; Australia is no exception. Most of the articles in the Australian society analyze the negative implications of generational changes.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on The Changing Relationship between the Generations’ Youth Studies Australia specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, these arguments don not stay for long as they are ultimately forgotten. This is unlike 30 years ago when generational change had an impact to the media and society. Michael Pusey, in his article, argues that the current relations between the young and old generation have been characterized by the mirror-opposite appearance than those, which pre-occupied the social media 30 years back. Indeed, the adversity of the generational gap in the current society is the vital issue that Pusey expresses in his article . According to Pusey (2007), the generational gap has been ignored in the current Australia economy. After the World War II, Australian government shared the resources equally as they were focused majorly on the gap that existed between the generations. The author argues that for the national income to be distributed equally in the economy, cultural conflicts should be addressed. Indeed, inequalities do exist between the baby boomers and their children and this has necessitated food insecurity among the residents. Therefore, it is critical that the concerned party needs to address the effect of generation change. Upon putting into consideration the impeccable effects that will be faced in the economy, the government will ensure economic tranquillity. In regard to the current economy reforms of Australia, the author argues that it does not favour the young generation the way it favoured the older generation. In addition, the author argues that in the near future, the young generation will be subjected to unnecessary responsibilities. As there are large numbers of retirees, the author claims that they will all be depending on the young generation for income support. With the existence of high unemployment rate in the current economy, the youth will be imposed with burden when footing the retirement bill for the older generation (Norton, 2003). As such, it increased the generational gap in the near future.Advertising Looking for critical writing on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In addition, the mirror-opposite appearance in the generational change is evidenced by the income distribution. It is important to note that economic restructuring is long term. This implies that any changes in the income distribution in the economy will not be effected until after a period of 20 years; as illustrated by the Australian economy. Ideally, the older generation believed that men were the brea dwinners in the family and the speculated income distribution for 20 years focused on the Men’s income. In the current economy, the women are also breadwinners in the household and the comparable figures will be misleading leading to generational gap. Consequently, the lifetime income has decreased due to lack of regulation in the labour market by the Australian government. In the older generation, lifetime income was extremely high unlike in the current society. This has been attributed to the increase in longevity in the current generation (Pusey, 2003). The compressed retirement benefits have been squeezed, and as an individual retires at an age of 55 years, one has 25 years more to budget for this small amount of retirement benefits. This was not the case in the past as they were able to access a huge amount of retirement benefits. As they had a lifespan of 65 years, they had only 10 years to budget for their retirement benefits. This clearly shows a mirror-opposite appea rance in the generational change. In addition, unlike the past, finance and superannuation have been degenerated. After the government privatised the superannuation industry, there has been an imposition of fees and charges by the financial institutions. This imposes a burden to families in supporting the new generation in their endeavour. Other factors that have increased the generation gap include deregulation of housing loans, and privatisation of health and education. The issues leading to the generational gap, as highlighted above, are relevant to the course. The government will impose measures necessary to combat the increase in the generational gap. This will have a positive impact on the international relations, as such, enhancing their economical stability among the new and older generation.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on The Changing Relationship between the Generations’ Youth Studies Australia specifically for you for only $1 6.05 $11/page Learn More International relations focus on understanding of the geographical territories regarding the economies, politics, cultural believes among others. In order to meet the international relations’ demands, the government needs to stabilize the internal forces; among them is the generational gap. In this article, Michael Pusey (2007) argues that, although the reforms put in place in the economic front have produced results, especially by creating wealth to a majority of people on the verge of retirement, the legacy of this wealth could as well be a starting point for what the author call an economic gap. According to Pusey (2003), Australia has experienced a good boom, which was underpinned by historically low rates of unemployment and a high demand for the countries mineral resources. Indeed, as the author posits that the economic boom hid something bigger. According to Pusey, the talk of economic boom, masked incomes in those real incomes were not increasing. It would not be possible for the young generation to generate as much income as the one that is retiring at the moment. In economic terms, then this is a big problem as it is the starting point for greater income inequalities among generations. However on the cultural side it is a very impressive story because people are able to relate with other well in a manner that was not so in the last 30 to 40 years or so. At this time, according to Pusey, there were many prejudices and conservative moral obligations (Pusey, 2007). However, at the moment about one third of the young generations are staying with their parents whom they see as their most influential people in their lives, even more important to them that their peers. Indeed even the parents claim to enjoy the presence of their children. In short, the author makes two assumptions. One is that the economic boom was responsible for the widening generation gap. The second assumption was that culture has an impor tant part to play in bringing the generation gap.Advertising Looking for critical writing on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! However, his argument does not seem to hold much water and seem to rest on public opinions. The author has not shown explicitly whether the economic conditions, that are responsible for the widening generation gap, did exist. In addition, he has not shown how these conditions were shaped by the economic reform of the last twenty or so years. In his claim that the economic reforms were responsible for increased unemployment, the author fails to explain why unemployment went up and down during the era of economic reforms as it can be deduced from his own data (Norton, 2003). Michael Pusey believes that economic reform was a direct result of the cold war and that families are the biggest losers because of economic reforms. This is because they are caught in the middle of economic reforms and cultural norms and values that are inherited from the pa rents. However, Pusey seems not to offer a balance approach in his blanket condemnation of economic reforms. There is no mention of factors such as advancements in technology or even shifts in consumer preferences, and natural disasters that occurred in the time the author tends to refers to. On the cultural side, the author shows how family values and norms bridge the gap brought about by economic reforms. Parents are doing what the author call â€Å"intergenerational transfers.† The parents are using their money to help children put up a deposit for their homes, and also they are helping the children pay off HECS. Therefore, culture plays an important part in compensating the destruction brought about by economic reforms. The issues raised by the author are important in understanding the building blocks of a vibrant society. References Norton, A. (2003). Practice Tests for the PSAT Thoughthe PSAT changed in the fall of 2015, there still aren't a whole lot of updated PSAT practice materials available. The College Board currently offers two sample PSAT practice testswith answer keys. These arethe best resources out there so far for practice questions for the PSAT: Official PSAT Practice Test 1 - Score Your Test - Answer Explanations Official PSAT Practice Test 2 - Score Your Test - Answer Explanations Test-prep company Ivy Global has also made their version of a PSAT practice test PDFavailable on their website. Keep in mind that these are not official College Board questions.Although they resemblePSAT questions and are useful practice, they're not an exact representation of what you'll encounter on test day. As time goes on, more and more practice materials specific to the current version of thePSATwill be released. For now, you can use a combination of the above resources, older PSAT practice tests, and official SAT practice questions to prep effectively. Before we delve into these other test-prep materials, though, how can you use these two newer PSAT practice tests to study for the exam? How to Use Updated PSAT Practice Tests for PSAT Prep As I mentioned, the College Board's official practice tests are the best representation of what you'll see when you take the PSAT. Before taking them, you should review the content and format of the PSATso you have a sense of what skills to focus on and develop. When you actually take the practice tests, be sure to simulate testing conditions by timing yourself and making sure you're familiar with the test format and instructions. Like with the SAT, there's no score penalty for wrong answers,so make your best guess on every question. Since there are only two official PSAT practice tests currently available, I would recommend saving them until you have done some initial studying. Then you can see how effective your studying has been, analyze your results to get a clear sense of your strengths and weaknesses, and readjust your focus as needed. Want to improve your PSAT score by 150 points? We have the industry's leading PSAT prep program. Built by Harvard grads and SAT full scorers, the program learns your strengths and weaknesses through advanced statistics, then customizes your prep program to you so that you get the most effective prep possible. Check out our 5-day free trial today: Practice Tests for the Old (Pre-2015) PSAT Below, we've compiled eight PSAT practice test PDFs with answer keys that you can download and print out. These consist offour official College Board tests and four unofficial ones. They are scored out of 240 (with the Critical Reading, Math, and Writing sections each worth 80 points) and deducta 1/4 point for each wrong answer. Keep this different system in mind while scoring these old practice tests. Official PSAT Practice Test 1 Official PSAT Practice Test 2 Official PSAT Practice Test 3 Official PSAT Practice Test 4 Unofficial PSAT Practice Test 1 Unofficial PSAT Practice Test 2 Unofficial PSAT Practice Test 3 Unofficial PSAT Practice Test 4 As mentioned above, the PSAT no longer takes a1/4 point deduction for wrong answers; now, it uses rights-only scoring, meaning you get one point for each correct answer and no points for wrong or skipped answers. The current PSAT scores Math on a scale from 160 to 760, and Reading and Writing together on the same scale (160 to 760). Your composite PSAT score, therefore, will be between 320 and 1520. You'll also get individual test scores for Math, Reading, and Writing and Language between 8 and 38 (these are then converted into the scaled scores above from 160 to 760). Besides using adifferent scoring system on the old PSAT practice tests, what else can you do to make your practice testing relevant for the current PSAT? How to Use Old PSAT Practice Tests for PSAT Prep To adapt your studying, you mustfamiliarize yourself with the changes in question types and skills on the current PSAT. For instance, changes to the PSAT in 2015eliminated sentence completion questions in favor of passage-based vocabulary questions, whichask you to define more common words that have multiple meanings. The PSAT also wants you to be able to find evidence for your answers in a passage, graph, or chart. These questions will ask you to interpret details, main points, or data in the context of a passage or other information provided. As a result, you'll need to concentrate on passage-based Reading questions and Math questions that require you tointerpret data from charts and graphs. Generally speaking, the Reading and Math questions on old PSAT practice tests are still very useful for prepping for the current PSAT. That being said, note that the old PSAT was two hours and 10 minutes long, whereasthe current PSAT is a little longer at two hours and 45 minutes. To practice pacing yourself over this longer amount of time, you might add an extra section or two to your practice test. All these changes in content, skills, and scoring match the ones made to the SAT in 2016.Below, we've compiled 10 practice tests for the SATyou can use to prep! Plus, you'll find free SAT practice questions online. But wait, there's more! Practice Tests and Sample Questions for the SAT Like the PSAT, there still aren't a ton of practice materials out for the current version of the SAT, which was firstadministered in the spring of 2016. However, we've gathered 10 official SAT practice tests (with answer keys) that you can download and take: SAT Practice Test 1:Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay SAT Practice Test 2:Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay SAT Practice Test 3:Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay SAT Practice Test 4:Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay SAT Practice Test 5:Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations |Essay SAT Practice Test 6:Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations |Essay SAT Practice Test 7:Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations |Essay SAT Practice Test 8:Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay SAT Practice Test 9: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations SAT Practice Test 10: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations In addition to these practice tests, you can find some free sample questions on the College Board website. Thesesample questions are for both the PSAT and SAT. This speaks to how similar the two tests have become. Whatever studying you do for the PSAT will help you a great deal once you take the SAT. Finally, you can create an account with Khan Academy and find high-quality practice questions for the SAT. This website works in conjunction with the College Board to produce official SAT practice questions. Given that the PSAT and SAT are so similar, are there any modifications you need to make when using SAT practice questions to prep for the PSAT? How to Use SAT Practice Tests and Questions for PSAT Prep The questions on the SAT and PSAT are almost identical. SAT Math may get a bit more advanced into algebra and functions, but otherwise the questions are very similar. The one exception is that the PSAT does NOT have an optional Essay section. TheSAT is somewhat longer at three hours (plus the additional 50-minute optional essay). Also, although the two tests resemble each otherin both content and scoring, the SAT is slightly more difficult than the PSAT is. As I discussed above, the PSAT isscored on a scale of 320-1520, with a range of 160-760 for Math and 160-760 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, or EBRW. The SAT, on the other hand, isscored on a scale of 400-1600. The score range for Math is 200-800 and the score range for EBRW is also200-800. Your PSAT scores are meant to predict your SAT scores; however, the scoring scaledoesn't go up as high to account for the fact that the PSAT is a slightly easier test. While a high score on the PSAT predicts a high SAT score, it doesn't necessarily coincide with a perfect 1600. As with the PSAT practice tests, I recommend timing yourself and simulating real test conditions. After, take some time to understand any mistakes you made and determine your strengths and weaknesses. Since the PSAT and SAT are so similar, you may use one test as a diagnostic pre-test and one as a post-test tofigure out where you're starting out and to gauge your progress after significant studying. Given all these practice materials, new and old, you should have plenty of resources to help you achieve a strong score on the PSAT. Let's quickly review the steps you should take to prep for the PSAT. Down to the last piece of the puzzle ... Best Ways to Prep for the PSAT The best resource for PSAT practice questions are the two official PSAT practice tests released by the College Board and listed at the beginning of this guide. Official test questions are the gold standard when it comes to sample questions, as they are the best representation of what will be on the actual exam. Since the PSAT is so similar to the SAT, the practice tests and free online questions for the SAT can be very useful prep tools. These questions will help you get ready for both the PSAT and SAT. Finally, you can still use older PSAT practice tests effectively, as long as you familiarize yourself with the changes to the exam and focus your energies on the relevant content and skills. This understanding will also help you avoid wasting time on material and information that's no longer relevant, such as Sentence Completion questions. As long as you take the time to understand the exam and adapt your test prep accordingly, you can still use the abundance of practice material out there to prep for the PSAT. And as an added bonus, all this prep will help you out a great deal in the future when you take the SAT! What's Next? Are you aiming for top scores on the PSAT? Alzheimer's Disease, a Family Trait Research Paper

Alzheimer's Disease, a Family Trait - Research Paper Example It is characterized by loss of memory, apathy, depression, impaired judgment, confusion, difficulty in controlling behavior, and in walking, speaking and swallowing. The Alzheimer’s Association, a non-profit organization based in Chicago, lists ten warning signs that could point to an early onset of Alzheimer’s. The most typical sign of the disease is loss of memory that is not distinct from age-related forgetfulness. Alzheimer’s memory loss is characterized by forgetting important dates or events and not remembering these later. Another significant sign of early onset Alzheimer’s is losing the ability to do routine tasks involving numbers such as balancing a checkbook or paying monthly bills. Daily tasks are difficult to complete, whether at home or at work. Problems with vision and in speaking or writing, having sudden mood swings, and being suddenly anti-social are also associated with early signs of Alzheimer’s. Once these symptoms are observed, a visit to the doctor becomes very necessary. Although it has been more than 100 years since Alzheimer’s disease was identified, studies on its causes, treatment and symptoms started only thirty years ago. In persons with the disease, protein deposits called beta-amyloid accumulate outside of the neurons in the brain, while tau, another protein accumulates inside the neurons. The neurons comprise the nerve cells which are responsible for communicating information or signals to the brain. The nerve cells are connected to each other by synapses, where the information flows in tiny pulses. The brain has trillions of these synapses for creation of memories, movements, emotions, sensations and thoughts. In Alzheimer’s disease, the synapses have accumulation of beta-amyloid proteins that lead to interference in the transfer of information and the death of the neurons. Tau proteins inside the nerve cells also block nutrient and cellular flow, which also result in cell death. Imbalance between the removal of the beta amyloid proteins and the accumulation result in the formation of the neurofibrillary tangles. The brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease are littered with dead and dying neurons. Risk factors The chance of getting Alzheimer’s is increased when heritable mutations are present in the genetic make-up of certain individuals. People with this type are said to have â€Å"familial† Alzheimer’s disease; symptoms of the disease can be observed starting at age 30. However, this genetic and heritable type occurs in only 1% of the cases. Risk factors for the disease have been identified (Alzheimer's Association, 2011). The primary risk factor is advancing age. Other risk factors are family history of Alzheimer’s, a specific form of apolipoprotein E-?4, having mild cognitive impairment, head trauma, and the presence of cardiovascular disease factors like high cholesterol levels. A medical history of Alzheimerâ€℠¢s also improves the chances of getting the disease, especially when a direct family member (parent or sibling) is afflicted with the disease. The correlation with apolipoprotein E-?4, and cardiovascular disease factors with the disease imply that lifestyle and diet can also contribute to disease development. Biochemical, genetic and medical history tests have been formulated that can actually predict the risk of having Alzheimer’s later in life. Family members of patients with Alzheimer’
